Buy some apps, and give the gift of clean water!

Sunday, February 6th, 2011

Charity:Water is a non-profit organization which brings safe and clean drinking water to those in 3rd world countries who cannot afford to tap into the water that’s right under their feet — literally.  With just $20, a person can have clean drinking water for life. 42,000 deaths occur each week from unsafe water and lack of basic sanitation, and 90% of those are children under five years old. The saddest fact of all is that many of these deaths are preventable.

Developers Against Poverty is a charity event which is taking place between the months of February and March.  The idea is that software developers (like Baked Ham Games) would donate to Charity:Water and help bring clean water.  Only 5 days in, they have already raised over $40,000… that’s 2,000 people who will now no longer die of because of a lack of clean water.

Baked Ham Games is pledging to help out in what way it can by donating a percentage of its app sales to Developers Against Poverty, with the main donation to occur at the end of March.  What I have pledged to do is to donate a percentage of my sales, with greater sales equaling a greater donation.  Although I am announcing this today, I am going to backtrack and include all sales for the days in February that have already passed.

So, how will this work? Well, I’m going to tier the giving based on the response from the community.  I will also update this often so that everyone can see how the giving is coming along.

The breakdown:

App Sales Percentage of Sales Donated
< $50 10%
$50-$99 15%
$100-$199 18%
$200-$249 20%
$250-$499 25%
>$500 33%

I hope you’ll agree with me that this is a noble and worthy cause, well worth whatever support we can raise together. Even if you don’t feel like participating in this initiative I’m doing, I hope you’ll at least consider supporting Charity:Water the next time you plan your charitable giving.
